A New Pet Peeve

Posted by Rebecca Tue, 04 Dec 2007 19:53:00 GMT

Have you ever met one of those people who always expresses themselves via quotes?

I don’t mean the occasional “To Be or Not To Be,” or the rare “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

I mean a daily, sometimes multiple times a day expression of one’s self via quotes from books, movies, poems, etc.

Do these people have ANY original thoughts? Do thought processes even occur in their heads? Or do they pass themselves off as being intelligent because they have read a lot?

Quite frankly, I don’t want to know what Shakespeare has to say about love, what Morrison has to say about racism, or what Mel Gibson has to say about freedom.

What do you think about all these things?

Do you think about all these things? Do you think about any of them?

I think I just found my new pet peeve.

I Bet I Could Be A Great Professor

Posted by Rebecca Tue, 04 Dec 2007 16:23:00 GMT

Did you know that I know how to integrate? Did you know that I can solve differential equations? Did you know that I can calculate the velocity dispersion of elliptical galaxies, analyze their surface brightness profiles, and plot their rotation curves? Did you know that I understand the gravothermal instability of globular clusters in the Galaxy?

Did you know that I don’t know how to calculate what percentage of amount A is amount B?

Yep.I had to ask my boyfriend how to do that today.

It’s amazing, I know.

At least I know how to turn on the photocopier.

Holy cow, folks! I just finished stretching after tonight’s workout and I finally was able to lean forward and touch my toes!

This is a major triumph! If only you knew.

Day Twenty-Three: Holiday Licentiousness

Posted by Rebecca Sat, 24 Nov 2007 03:33:00 GMT

I was a very good girl today. I did quite a bit of hiking while we were geocaching, and then I went to the gym with Caroline and worked off some of yesterday’s calories.

But that’s not going to stop me from having a second slice of pumpkin pie, in addition to the piece of coffee cake and the two brownies I’ve had today.

Don’t look at me like that (over your 4th slice of pecan pie)! It’s Thanksgiving weekend. You’re pigging out with the rest of us!

Being scatterbrained humbles intellectual conceit.

Posted by Rebecca Thu, 15 Nov 2007 03:57:00 GMT

Oh.My.Goodness.

I am my mother’s child.

Becky and I were leaving Julianna’s house tonight after prayer, and as we were walking down the driveway, I was digging through my over-stuffed purse looking for my keys. Never knowing where the hell my keys are when I leave someplace is a genetic disorder I inherited from my precious mom.

I found the keys just as I got to the end of the driveway and said out loud to Becky, who had stopped several feet back, “Now, where did I park?” As I posed this question, I lifted up my head and looked around on the side of the street and finally into the driveway, where my eyes stopped when they rested on my CR-V, which was right next to me. Inches away, even.

When I realized what I had done, I looked at Becky and asked “Did I really just do that?”

“Yes.”

And then we both busted out laughing.

Day Five: Halloween Recap

Posted by Rebecca Mon, 05 Nov 2007 14:02:00 GMT

I know most people have forgotten about Halloween by now, but I’m going to post about it anyway, now that I have pictures to post.

My friend Marci and her husband threw a fantastic costume party the Friday evening before Halloween. The hosts had excellent costumes. Do you recognize them?

Yip-yips

A few flappers came to the party

Flapper Twins

as did a samurai.

Samurai Kai

There was a game of cat-and-mouse,

Cat-and-Mouse

and Cruella sported her dead dogs.

Cruella Deville

Jareth, the Goblin King (a.k.a. David Bowie in scary makeup and spandex) even showed up. He had a crotch that squeaked when squeezed, and ended up winning best costume.

Jareth/Rebecca

Others where there, but I have no pictures to prove it. They included Chuck Norris,Professor Plum and the Candlestick, The Sun, a Christmas Tree, Bellatrix Lestrange, Jay Gatsby, Jack the Ripper, a zombie and a gargoyle.

It was definitely the best Halloween party I’ve been to, with lots of great food, great music, great people, good alcohol, and fantastic costumes. I can’t wait for next year!

OMG - NaBloPoMo Starts Tomorrow!

Posted by Rebecca Wed, 31 Oct 2007 13:50:00 GMT

See that nifty little lolcat button over there on the left? The new one? That is really silly?

That’s actually a nifty button that will take you to the NaBloPoMo Web Site. Notice how I didn’t make a link out of the word ‘NaBloPoMo’ just now? That’s because I really want you to click the button.

Really. I want you to click the button. Really. Badly.

NaBloPoMo - National Blog Posting Month - begins tomorrow. The rules, basically, are that participants must post something every single day for the month of November. At the end of the month, successful blogs will be eligible for prizes.

I managed to pull it off last year, although I didn’t win anything. This year, I’m gonna try again. We’ll see how I do. Hopefully I won’t have to resort to describing all the items that are sitting on my desk. I really hope I don’t. It would be tragic to have to resort to that a second time.

While you’re at it, check out my official NaBloPoMo page. I’ve already got friends up there, and it hasn’t even started yet. Cool, huh?

Blogger Becks luvs teh intarweb!

Oh man oh man! Since I wrote the above, I just added three of my new NaBloPoMo friends’ blogs to my Google Reader account, AND I found out that there’s a new Randomizer for this year’s contest, which means, once it’s fully operational, I’ll be coming across tons of new blogs that I love, and they’ll all go in to Google Reader as well.

I foresee a month of getting very little done in my life, apart from reading about other peoples’ lives and writing about my own. What great fun it shall be!

Go Figure

A bird pooped in my salad yesterday and I had to throw it away.

That made me very sad.

Um, Scary?

Posted by Rebecca Wed, 24 Oct 2007 18:26:00 GMT

This is what I saw on my way to class this morning.

A girl in black leggings (since when did someone allow spandex to come back into style?), wearing a gray t-shirt, a black jacket, and a red and green and blue plaid scarf.

Oh, and she also had on red, peep-toe jellies.

Yes. You did read that correctly. Jellies.

What’s funny is that she probably wasn’t even alive the last time I saw jellies, about twenty years ago.

I know I’m only 26, but I still can’t help feeling a little old.
